As I was going through my Facebook news feed I came across a status that said: "Graduations r jst so ova- rated! I really dnt c wat all the fuss is about!!!" that was about a week before my graduation, it got me thinking... and I just had to disagree.
The very first graduation ceremony I attended was so touching. I left that venue inspired to do better so that I too, could one day walk across that stage. It is a great achievement that calls for a reason to celebrate. It is a necessary occasion that makes us look back on where it all began to how far we've come through it all. Success is surely something to be celebrated because to some it doesn't come easy.
Fifteen years ago, I was excited to be starting my first day at school. The years rolled by and things got tougher. In Matric, I stood on that on that stage with my class mates singing I made it, I'm the worlds greatest (R. Kelly's- Worlds Greatest). I arrived in University and faced challenges, others facing much worse than I, but through it all I never gave in and kept on moving forward so that I too could get that 1 MINUTE OF FAME, that moment when everyone was acknowledging me for the 15 years of hard work I had put in to make something of my life.
One minute over 15 years sounds so ridiculous hey?
Its not at all. Graduation is not about the certificate... its about the acknowledgement that you did good. Its about saying that we are so proud of you, and its about saying that we still believe in you for the future and I don't think thats over-rated at all!
I was lucky to be graduating with my cousin that day- Kwande Cakata and that's our family... the people we wouldn't have made it without!
My cousin Nikiwe Thwala whom I shared this day with as well, but she was all the way in PTA.
With my friends, Lihle Ngxokolo, Khanyisa Ntlama and Zimkhitha Ndamase!
My boyfriend at his Graduation- 21st May 2012!
Congratulations to all the Graduates of 2012...
